In addition to his competitive career, Nick holds dual master’s degrees in Architecture and Civil Engineering and founded a design firm that grew to 80 professionals across Europe and Asia. FITASC Mounts Explained: Parallel vs Two-Piece | Sporting Clays Shotgun How-To with Nick Berry

Among the most deceptive targets in sporting clays is the rabbit. Rolling and bouncing along the ground, it appears faster than it truly is and consistently tricks shooters into missing ahead. In this video, The Clay Lab is joined by Laurie Daniel of Westside Sporting Grounds in Katy, Texas, to break down the keys to successfully breaking rabbits. Laurie is both a respected coach and a competitor who continues to place strongly in World FITASC rankings. Her teaching combines competitive insight with years of coaching experience, making her uniquely equipped to explain why rabbits challenge shooters and how to overcome those challenges. Laurie emphasizes one of the most important truths about rabbit targets: every time they touch the ground, they slow down. Unlike airborne clays that may maintain momentum, rabbits constantly lose speed. The trick comes from how our eyes perceive them. Because rabbits roll directly against the ground, there’s little visual separation, and this creates the illusion of greater speed. Shooters react by giving too much forward lead, only to watch their shots land well ahead of the target. In the video, Laurie demonstrates how to counteract these traps. First, she stresses avoiding over-leading. Trust that the rabbit is moving slower than it looks and place your muzzle accordingly. Second, she advises staying close to the target’s actual line of travel. Rabbits don’t rise or dip in the sky—they hug the ground—so muzzle placement needs to reflect that. Third, Laurie highlights the importance of commitment. Rabbits may bounce unpredictably, but hesitation almost always leads to a miss. A smooth move and confident follow-through are the shooter’s best tools. Different shooting methods apply depending on the rabbit’s angle. Swing-through works well because it allows the shooter to start slightly behind and move through the slowing target, avoiding the tendency to give too much lead. Sustained lead can work on smoother surfaces but risks exaggerating the illusion of speed. Pull-away is useful when the rabbit rolls predictably, with the shooter locking on before creating separation. Regardless of the method, Laurie stresses the need to pick a plan and execute it with confidence. Another vital factor is terrain. Rabbits behave differently on gravel, grass, or dirt. Each surface affects how much the target slows or bounces. Laurie encourages shooters to pay attention to the ground as much as the clay, since anticipating the effect of terrain builds consistency. Clay Target Instruction with Will Fennell of Fennell Shooting School. Will Fennell takes us through how to shoot Chandelle target presentations in sporting clays at events such as English Sporting, FITASC, 5 Stand, Super Sporting, Compak Sporting and other clay target or “clay pigeon” disciplines. A chandelle is a type of clay target used in sporting clays that follows an arcing trajectory and changes speed while in flight. Chandelles can be challenging to shoot because of their visually dynamic movement, speed change, and transition. A Chandelle target presentation can be thrown with either a Standard (108mm) target, International Target (110mm), Midi, 70mm, Battue, or even a Rabbit Target thrown as a “Rabbue”. We talk about how Chandelles are crossers, not droppers, meaning they move to the right or left for entire presentation distance they travel.
