  3. Hello, I tremendously enjoyed watching the video of Mr. Greenwood building the custom stock! Truly a work of art…what is the process for a sporting clays shooter to pick out a wood blank and start the process of getting a custom stock built?

    Thanks,
    Charles

    1. Happy to hear you got some value from it! It really is great to watch him work building some just for you. I think you have two options working with Jim given what you’re asking. You can do a standard pattern stock, where you won’t pick the wood because it’s made to be replaced later on with your chosen wood for the final stock (this is because he has hours of work into the black before you even arrive doing the heading work for your specific gun. Or you can choose an upgraded pattern stock where he chooses a higher grade of Turkish walnut that’s stronger and lasts even longer (highly recommended as you will basically have two nice stocks by the time your final stock is done). Im sure he is willing to let you visit, choose your wood, and then you come back another time but it really eats up your own time and builds costs for you. The pattern process really isn’t put in place for “beauty” when it comes to wood selection so that’s why he just uses American walnut, as its a bit softer and easier to make adjustments as you need them. While your there doing your pattern stock you can pick out your final stock wood but I wouldn’t expect a super pretty pattern stock even though most still come out pretty nice, we are going for a perfect fit! Beauty comes in the final stock process and it’s definitely worth waiting for. Hope that helps. Your also welcome to just call Jim (website greenwoodcustomstocks.com) and ask him what’s the best way for you to achieve what your looking to do. Most have to travel but there have been many who travel their multiple times just to get exactly what they want wood wise every step of the way but it adds up.
